1.5 Million Housing Units for the Poor
October 5, 2007
Bipartisan legislation to create the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund will be voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives during the week of October 8, 2007. This is the first time that this legislation will receive a vote by the full House. If enacted, it would be the first new housing production program since 1990 for households with the lowest incomes.
The bill, HR 2895, would establish a Trust Fund to construct, acquire, rehabilitate and preserve 1.5 million housing units over the next ten years. At least 75 percent of the new resources must produce or preserve affordable housing for extremely low income people, and at least 30 percent of the funding would have to serve people whose income qualifies them for SSI. Any entity with experience and capacity to carry out the mission of the Trust Fund would be eligible to apply, including nonprofit and faith based organizations.
