Renewal of Federal Homeless Assistance Program Under Consideration

July 16, 2007

This July marks the 20th anniversary of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act which serves as the main source of federal funds to address homelessness.  Both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have introduced bills to reauthorize the Act and reauthorization is an opportunity to fashion the law to more effectively solve the problem of homelessness.

The House introduced H.R. 840, the HEARTH Act, and the Senate introduced S. 1518, the Community Partnership to End Homelessness Act.  Both bills would provide the McKinney-Vento program with stronger and more effective tools to prevent and end homelessness.

A strong, flexible and adequately funded McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance program will protect children, families and individuals from homelessness or the possibility of being homeless and provide the support services necessary to keep these vulnerable people away from the risk of homelessness.  Click here to read more on this issue.  Scroll to the bottom of the linked page to send a message to Senator Patty Murray, Senator Maria Cantwell and your Representative encouraging their support of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Program.
