Renewal of Food Stamp Program and Small Farm Supports in the Farm Bill
November 6, 2007
The U.S. Senate is currently debating and considering amendments to the Farm Bill, which authorizes the Food Stamp program and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), defines domestic agricultural policies, and guides U.S. policies in addressing hunger worldwide. The reauthorization is an opportunity to fashion the law to more effectively address hunger, assist struggling and small farms, and reduce U.S. trade practices that harm farmers in developing countries.
The U.S. House of Representatives already passed its Farm Bill with food aid provisions that are slightly better than the current Senate proposals. Maintaining the House funding levels, improving access to food stamps, and protecting the viability of small farms domestically and abroad should be priorities for the Senate bill.
A strong and adequately funded Farm Bill will feed hungry children, families and seniors, serve as a necessary support system to address poverty, and help small farms in the U.S. and worldwide. CLICK HERE to read more and to take action.
