U.S. Congressional Committee Will Soon Consider Vital Food Program
July 11, 2007
The current Farm Bill expires at the end of September and the House Agricultural Committee is scheduled to reauthorize a new version in the next few weeks. The Farm Bill defines domestic food and agricultural policies over several years and also guides U.S. policies in addressing hunger worldwide.
Reauthorization of the Farm Bill is an opportunity to stop the spread of rural poverty, expand domestic anti-hunger programs, promote conservation and good stewardship of the land, strengthen the viability of small and mid-sized farms, and ensure safe living and working conditions for farmworkers. Equally important, provisions in the Farm Bill direct how the United States provides food for hungry people worldwide and assists poor countries to promote long-term agricultural development and self-sufficiency.
The WSCC will send out an action alert in the next few weeks asking people of faith to contact their U.S. House members to support compassionate and humanitarian provisions in the Farm Bill.
