U.S. House of Representatives Overturns Ban on U.S. Funds to Provide Abortions Overseas

July 11, 2007

On June 21, during debate on the FY 2008 State/Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill (H.R. 2764), the House of Representatives voted to keep language in the bill that will reverse a nearly 25-year old U.S. policy, known as the Mexico City Policy, that prevents the use of federal tax dollars to perform and promote abortions in developing countries.  By a vote of 218-205, House members overturned the Mexico City Policy.
Prior to the vote, Cardinal Justin Rigali, Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s Committee for Pro-Life Activities, sent a letter to Congress urging support to retain the Mexico City Policy in H.R. 2764.
President Bush has stated that he would veto any bill presented to him that expands current federal aborition policies and laws.
